Music and Culture Scholarship


 Imagine learning Kathak free of cost under Birju Maharaj, and watching him in action for a month, without spending a paisa. Or a month of looking on as Anjolie Ela Menon paints and learning the ropes. Again, free of cost.
    Then apply for the SPIC MACAY — Society for Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Among Youth — scholarship. Through this, SPIC MACAY makes an attempt to bring students in contact with dedicated and acclaimed people or gurus who have achieved a lot in their respective fields.
    The Likely Gurus for 2011 are the Dalai Lama’s Monastery, Pt. Birju Maharaj, Pt. Hari Prasad Chaurasia, Girija Devi, Anjolie Ela Menon, Guru Ammannur M Chakyar’s pupil, G.Venu and Kapila Nangiar, Ustad Fariduddin Dagar, Ustad R. Fahimuddin Dagar, Janab Abdul Rashid Khan, Swami Niranjananand Saraswati of Bihar School of Yoga, Aruna Roy, J. Gurappa Chetty of kalamkari, Shri Prakash Amte, Shri Shivanand Hegde of Yakshgana, Kerala Kalamandalam for Kathakali, Teejan Bai, Pt. Kumar Bose, Daya Bai, Prerna Shrimali (kathak), ShreeHirachand Vikamshi (painting), Pt. Govindrao Deshmukh (tabla), Swami Dayanand Saraswati. The possible / confirmed dates with each Guru will be mailed in the next 10 days.
    To submit the application, you can use the above mentioned tentative list of Likely Gurus. To apply, the candidate should send his / her profile, along with a one page write-up on ‘Why I want to go.’ Candidates can download the form from www.spicmacay.com under the Scholarship Scheme link. Those selected will be called for an interview.
    All final selected candidates for this scheme must furnish a bond of Rs. 3,000, which will be refunded after successful completion of the tenure. The scheme will commence in the months of May, June and July, each candidate will have to stay with the Guru for a month.
