Chevening in India
 The India programme began in 1987 and has supported over 1600 Indians to date. It is now the FCO’s second scholarship programme globally with an annual budget of over $ 1.5 million, supporting over 120 scholarships every year. These comprise a range of short-term tailor –made professional courses and long-term taught academic courses tenable at various higher education institutions in the UK
Aims and Objectives
 The aim of the British Chevening Scholarship programme in India is to offer an opportunity to deserving Indian students and professional, who wish to study or train in the UK, to achieve their goals by providing financial assistance. The objective is to encourage young and dynamic Indian students and professionals to study in the UK and then return to India to contribute to ongoing and future work in the relevant discipline. Programmes
Scheme A-Long-term (Open) Scholarships
 These scholarships are applicable for a one-year postgraduate (Master’s) study at any UK university (* with the exception of Indian Friends of London School of Economics Shared Scholarships) and are fully funded by the FCO.The following programmes are available under this scheme: Open Sustainable development Sholarships, Open Science and Innovation Scholarships, Indian Friends of London School of Economics Shared Scholarship. Candidates applying for this scholarship should seek admission at the London School of Economics only
Number of Scholarships: Over 120 awards annually comprising of about 60 long-term scholarships for academic courses and about 60 short-term scholarships for courses tailor-made for targeted professional group
Value :Chevening scholarships cover the tuition fee (up to a maximum of £ 12,000) and the living expenses for the scholar for the duration of the award, which normally varies from  weeks 12 months. International airfares are normally not covered. (For courses with tuition fee of over £ 12,000 the excess amount should be borne by the candidates).
 General eligibility
Indian nationals residing in India of outstanding academic ability with a good first degree. Candidates are normally under 35 years of age.
You are eligible for a British Chevening Scholarship under the India programme, if you are
1. An Indian national with a valid Indian passport
2) resident in Indian at the time of application
3) under 35 years of age at the time of application for most of the scholarship programmes except for specified ones.
4) Of outstanding academic ability with a good (as minimum of upper second class, preferably a first class) first degree (Bachelor’s) or equivalent from a recognized Indian university.
 5) Normally interested in pursuing a course of not more than 12 months duration in the UK
 Note: Any Master’s course of more than 12 months duration is generally not eligible. PhD and other research course are NOT eligible
6) fluent in spoken and written English
 Note: If English is neither your first Language nor the medium of academic instruction, you will be required to provide evidence of your proficiency in the language e.g. a satisfactory score in IELTS or similar international English language proficiency tests. A list of acceptable tests can be obtained directly from the UK institutions you are applying to.
 Who is NOT eligible?
 You are not eligible to apply of you
1) Wish you study an undergraduate degree
2) wish you study a course of more than 12 months in duration
 3) have already started a course in the UK at the time of application
 4) have in the past received a British Government funded scholarship
5) Work for the British Government (including the British Council)
6) are seeking military training (though military personnel can take academic course at civilian institutions)
7) are applying for distance learning
 8) are applying for part time courses
 About the Scholarship
 1. These Scholarships are available for applicants wishing to study a one year Masters course in the UK.This scheme is not tied to any UK institution.
 2. Applicants must identify the course they wish to follow and the UK Institution they wish to attend. It is responsibility of the applicant to apply directly to the UK Institution(s) of their choice (up to three) for admission before they apply for a Chevening scholarship. You are required to submit proof of your applications with your Chevening Scholarship Application form. If you are offered a chevening Scholarship the offer is subject to a confirmed offer of admission from one of your three chosen UK Institutions by mo later than May of the year of admission failing which the scholarship offer is withdrawn.
3. You must apply for the Masters course which falls one of the following four Open Scholarship Programme
a) Sustainable Development
b) Economic Governance ,Finance and Public Administration
c) Science and Innovation
 d) Indian Friends of London school of Economics Shared Scholarship
4) Value: Chevening Open Programme Scholarships cover the Tuition fee, Living expenses for th duration of the scholarship for a maximum period of 12 months,
 Return airfare from India to UK,UK Student Visa
 Application: Prospectus and application forms are available from August at the British Council offices in Chennai,Kolkata,Mumbai and New Delhi and the British Libraries in Ahmadabad ,Bangalore,Bhopal,Chandigarh, Hyderabad,Pune and Thiruvananthapuram.They can also be downloaded from the website:www. Britishcouncil.org.in /scholarships. Applications should reach your nearest British Council office in Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai or New Delhi by the stipulated deadline. Applicants for Scheme A and C are advised to apply to the universities before making their scholarship application.
Selection: Candidates for the Chevening programme are selected through a process of shortlisting from the applications received by the British Council, followed by personal interviews, which are generally held in New Delhi. Subsequent to the interviews, which are generally held I New Delhi? Subsequent to the interviews the selection committee identifies the required number of candidates for the awards. The decision of the selection committee is final
Other Chevening Programmes
 FCO/British Gas International /University of Strathclyde Joint Scholarship Students need to apply directly to the participating institutions (for admission as well as scholarships )and NOT to the British Council.
Upto 8 scholarships globally-offered to students from specified countries for pursuing master’s course I Engineering, Applied Sciences, Business Administration for a duration of One year.
 Eligibility
 A good honours degree (Preferably first class) from a recognized Indian university and a minimum of one years work experience (links with the Oil/Gas industry are desirable). Preference is given to those candidates who have not undertaken a course of full time study in the last two years. Candidates should have not studied for a degree course in the EU or US previously. Candidates should have proficiency in English (6.5 in IELTS or 600 in TOEFL). A good GMAT score is required for MBA applicants. Value Tuition fees, maintenance costs and return economy airfare. Age limit: 35 years
Method of application
Applications for admission should be made directly to the University. Shell Centenary/ Chevening Scholarships are offered for pursuing Master’s level courses in broad categories of Applied Sciences and Technology, Environmental Sciences, Business Management, Laws and Economics, Specific disciplines and subjects vary from one university to another, reflecting the specialties of different universities.
Eligibility: Candidates having a good first degree (first class Bachelors degree from a recognized University. Professional work experience is preferred Candidates should have firm offer of admission from any one of these UK Universities: University of Cambridge, University of Edinburgh, University of Oxford, University of Durham, Imperial College London, University College London and University of Leeds. Candidates should be fluent in English (minimum 7.5 in IELTS) .Age limit:35 years
 (Current or former employees of any of the Royal Dutch/Shell Group of Companies are not eligible)

Nottingham Developing Solutions Joint Chevening Scholarships
 FCO, University of Nottingham and Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) offer Scholarship for pursuing Master’s level courses at the University of Nottingham in selected subject in the areas of Environment, Food, Health and technology.
Eligibility: Applicants must have a first or high second class honours degree with preference to those who have additionally a first class Master’s degree equivalent. Candidates should apply directly to University of Nottingham and should hold a confirmed offer of admission.Age:26-35 years
